The association between pre-operative malnutrition and post-amputation clinical outcomes: A systematic review

Background: In patients who underwent lower limb amputation (LLA), the prevalence of malnutrition and its association with clinical outcomes are unclear. Objectives: This systematic review aims to identify literature summarise existing information on (1) in LLA (2) between pre-operative nutritional status post-surgery require amputation. Methods: A search was conducted four electronic databases (Cochrane Central Register Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, CINAHL Scopus) eligible studies. The strategy based keywords – amputation, undernutrition. Article were included regardless study design; if they written English; adult or foot amputation; performed pre-amputation nutrition assessments. Results: Seven articles met eligibility criteria. Malnutrition assessed by biochemistry and/or anthropometry none which validated assessment tools. Nevertheless, abnormal results associated delayed wound healing, complications failed compared normal ranges. parameters mortality less consistent. Only one used a screen tool found half population at risk malnutrition, but no reported. Conclusions: remains unclear as all studies that investigated unvalidated There is an urgent need address this knowledge gap future research.
